Packed Records - The Songs
|
|
- Frying Pan - A gritty, urban Afro-funk, B-3 organ groove. Searing flute, guitar and sax solos set the tone.
- Ginza Lady - According to Elvin's wife, Keiko, this song tells a story. A long, furious guitar solo is followed up by a soaring sax solo. Listen for the unique bowed bass solo, and of course Elvin's studio shaking drum solo.

- Afternoon Relection - A soothing moment of calm in the storm of Elvin's drumming. A reflective flute solo is followed by what Elvin called a "tricky" guitar solo. Then a beautiful piano solo. Notice Elvin's mallet work and shimmering percussive colors.
- The Pickup Blues - An uptempo blues in the style of Gene Ammon's organ combo work. A slow grinding guitar solo starts off, taking the blues all the way down. The tempo quickens up to a guitar and drum duel. A deep blues sax solo is followed by guitar and drum exchanges.
- The Usual Suspects - Heavy Jazz in a medium tempo groove. A powerful sax solo leads off, followed by a molodic flute statement. A long and flowing guitar solo closes it out, otherwise, Elvin said he could go all night with it!
- Beware of What You Want - Clearly the most involved arrangement on the recording. You'll hear a period of calm and relection, followed by the fast and furious theme. A turbulent tom-tom breakdown punctuates the middle section. A surefingered bass solo proceeds a sparkling piano solo. Next is a probing guitar solo, which fires Elvin up to a brief climatic exchange.
- Tuesday Night Groove - This is the band's break theme. A grinding organ groove, with a triplet based theme. A soulful sax solo is followed by a wahwah guitar solo. Elvin calls this song "Gutbucket".
